The fifth in my recently begun H.G. Wells collection (and I don't even like science fiction!), Mr. Blettsworthy on Rampole Island is apparently one of the author's lesser known novels and somewhat of a modified later version of his Doctor Moreau plot.

The preface to the first edition (London: Ernest Benn Limited, ) reads "Being the Story of a Gentleman of Culture and /5. "Mr. Blettsworthy on Rampole Island" is a novel by H. Wells. In the style of Swift and reminiscent of The Island of Dr Moreau, this is a classic story of a man stranded on a island of horrors, only to escape into the horror of the Great War.

Part of the Literary Companions book series (LICOM) Abstract Wells described Mr. Blettsworthy on Rampole Island as ‘a caricature-portrait of the whole human world’.

46 The book is dedicated ‘to the Immortal Memory of Candide ’, which surely gives the : J. Hammond. Despite his complaint in his Experiment in Autobiography () that Mr Blettsworthy on Rampole Island () got a ‘tepid reception’, the novel seems to have been widely praised on its first appearance.

The influential critic Middleton Murray, writing in the New Adelphi, judged that the story blended farce and tragedy magnificently.

The Undying Fire: A Contemporary Novel () is a flawed but brave attempt to recast the Book of Job in a form appropriate to the needs and problems of the twentieth century. In The Dream (), a fine and much neglected work, the narrator looks back on a typical Victorian lifetime from the perspective of twenty centuries : John Hammond.

Mr Blettsworthy on Rampole Island strongly recalls The Island of Dr. Moreau and is therefore Wells at his best and most fantastic. Being the Story of a Gentleman of Culture and Refinement who suffered Shipwreck and saw no Human Beings other than Cruel and Savage Cannibals for several :   Mr.

Blettsworthy on Rampole Island () Dedicated ‘to the immortal memory of CANDIDE ’ and sporting, as you can see, by far the most repulsive cover art of any Wells title, Mr. Blettsworthy on Rampole Island is less a conte philosophique than a squib fantastique.
